“Haven’t you felt eerie around that house?”

“Everytime I pass by the place, I feel a certain sense of dread. While the lights are always on and the gardens manicured quite well, I have never seen anyone around.

“Whoa!” He seemed horror struck.

The two friends had just shifted to the locality and found the things happening in the house quite mysterious.

“The other day I had to pause near the house for some work and I actually felt someone brush past me. But when I looked around, there was no one. It was quite a test of my character.”

100 word fiction: The locked room..

The purple door

PHOTO PROMPT © CEayr

The room had been locked for years. Rachel had heard stories about her aunt’s ghost lurking behind those doors. This aunt had failed in love and out of despair, she committed suicide.

Rachel didn’t believe all this until one evening when she heard footsteps from the room. They got louder and louder and finally someone began banging the door from inside amidst cries for help. Even before she could react, the door was thrown open.

Almost immediately, Rachel got up sweating profusely. It was 3am and she looked out only to see the room locked as before. Was she dreaming?

He always made it a point to switch on the lights before stepping out of his room to go to the washroom in the middle of the night. He had a queer feeling that a pair of eyes was watching over him.

Microblog Mondays: The spirit of Neerja Bhanot

I can’t really get over the experience of watching the Bollywood flick – ‘Neerja‘. It’s the story of Neerja Bhanot, a 22 year old senior flight purser who died but not until she had saved more than 340 lives when 4 terrorists hijacked Pan Am Flight 73 in Karachi way back in 1986.

Though she was young, she taught all of us so much about humanity and love that even the oldies could have learnt a lesson or two. The courage and thinking which she displayed in the time of despair was unmatched.

Rather than differentiating passengers based on their caste, creed, religion, region, gender and so on, she went all out to save each and everyone. It was as though even fear got scared looking her in the eye. She could have been the first one to escape but instead chose to stay on until every passenger had been evacuated safely.

While she was awarded by India, Pakistan and USA, her legacy lives on with the Neerja Bhanot Award which is given to a woman who has fought injustice in society with determination.

Microblog Mondays: Aviation turbulence..

Is aviation turbulence dangerous?

Is aviation turbulence dangerous?

As we took off from Delhi for our 55 minute flight to Lucknow, we ran into quite a bit of turbulence. Sitting almost at the tail of the aircraft, we could feel the bumps even more so much so that one of my fellow passengers asked the air-hostess if this was happening for the first time.

While aviation has made our world smaller than ever before by reducing distances and times between continents, there are many who are nervous flyers. Whether it’s sweaty palms or a chill down their spine, the signs are ominous.

For those who don’t know, turbulence isn’t always associated with stormy weather. There is also the concept of clear air turbulence (CAT) which occurs when different bodies of air meet at varied speeds at a height of 23,000-39,000 feet. Interestingly, CAT is also the most difficult to detect.

And therefore, it is always suggested to keep your seat-belts loosely fastened at all times during the flight lest you suffer any kind of injuries.

“Why did I have to agree to work in the lab the entire night?” He said to no one in particular.

Though George didn’t believe in ghosts, he felt a bit uneasy thinking that he was the only soul in the entire building that night. As he stepped out of the lab to drink water from the nearby cooler, he heard what sounded like water falling from somewhere. Was it a leaking faucet or something more?

Whatever the case, he kept himself busy and didn’t dare come out of the lab for the rest of the night.

“It looks as though that house has been abandoned since quite a long while.”

Their group had been trekking through the jungle when they came across a dilapidated house in the middle of nowhere. Tired from the day’s heat, they decided to rest for a while.

As it started to get dark, they began to hear strange noises which became louder with time. When they realized that sheltering themselves in the house wouldn’t be safe anymore, they began to run for their lives away from an unseen enemy.

“Those people in the dark with long hair, scary eyes and deformed faces will stare at you if you go towards the attic.”

She had been warned by her mother to avoid going there since the time she was born. Though Anne had heard ghost stories of how they roamed about in darkness, she seemed to be at ease even when there was not a ray of light around.

She stealthily walked towards the loft and opened the door. The voices calling out her name began to grow louder and finally she was sucked away into darkness and the door slammed shut with her mother yelling in the background.

Fearless in Life

“I am really scared to talk in front of a huge crowd of people. What if I make a mistake?”

“That sounds crazy. I can’t elope with that guy. What will society say?

“Are you crazy? How can you even think I will walk up to her and propose? She’s way beyond my league. What if she slaps me?”

“I am terrified of heights. Please don’t consider me for the bungee jumping experience.”

How many of you have come across any or all of the above situations? I can hear a lot of people saying ‘Yes’. Fear is that unpleasant emotion which makes you feel that any thing living or dead would cause harm to you.

That eerie night..

Since he was in a support project, his work timings differed every two weeks. So for two weeks a month it was a 9am – 6pm shift while for the other two weeks it was a 9pm – 6am shift. He was a very hardworking, honest and dedicated resource. Whether it was being asked to work on weekends or on public holidays or even spend late hours, he never refused. That night there wasn’t much work at office. All his teammates had left by 1am. But he thought to spend some more time in learning a few more concepts which sounded confusing to him. By 3am he packed his stuff and set out to leave.
