There are so many of us who eat, sleep and drink movies all the time be it Bollywood or Hollywood. We dream of living the characters, their lives, having lavish lifestyles like theirs and more. There are so many moments when we laugh and cry along with them. In those 3 hours, we live through their lives many a time thinking aloud on how life would be if it were a movie.
If I had the chance to be a character in a movie, I would look no further than Ranchoddas Shamaldas Chanchad or Rancho from the 2009 Bollywood smashit 3 Idiots. The flick raises several issues in a satirical way on our education system like rote learning and the lack of application of the theoretical concepts in general work-life.
Rancho is someone who believes that while learning from textbooks maybe important, what’s more important is to build creativity. One should always think of solving any problems creatively through different kinds of ideas rather than always look at textbooks and bring in theoretical concepts more often than not.
He strongly believes that students must be given the chance to think out of the box rather than learning each concept by heart and vomiting them out in year end exams. In India, even today so many end up studying engineering and then figure out what to do with their lives once they finish. Why waste your hard earned money on something which you may never even use in your life? His love for creativity and thinking out of the box is shown from the below definition for a machine.
A machine is anything that reduces human effort.Anything that simplifies work, or saves time, is a machine. It’s a warm day, press a button, get a blast of air.The fan… A machine! Speak to a friend miles away. The telephone… A machine! Compute millions in seconds. The calculator… A machine! We’re surrounded by machines From a pen’s nib to a pants’ zip – all machines. Look!Up and down in a second. Up, down, up, down”
Rancho always believes that one shouldn’t chase success but instead if one chases excellence then success will automatically follow.
He is also shown to be so passionate about life and optimistic about anything and everything. His reel quote “All is well” in any pressure cooker situation became a sensation in real life too.
At the end of all this, he was a kind-hearted and jovial individual at heart who was always loved be it among friends or by his fiancee.

I guess we all loved Aamir khan as ‘Ranchoddas Shamaldas Chanchad’, curious, constantly moving, loves science and engineering. And we all loved 3 idiots too as it had some great songs, storyline and life lessons. Thanks Aseem for writing for #TadkaTuesday.

That’s a great choice, Aseem! Who doesn’t love Mr. Aamir Khan and his perfectionism? And, the character of Rancho from 3 Idiots has been etched in such a way, it will definitely leave us a lot wiser in many ways! 🙂

The character – Rancho was surely one of the best we all have seen on the Indian movie scene.
