100 word fiction: Man vs mountain

A rocky situation..

A rocky situation..

PHOTO PROMPT – © Connie Gayer …(Mrs. Russell)

Ramesh, a daily wage labourer couldn’t have imagined that he would lose his wife through a freak accident as she slipped from the nearby mountain and injured herself. Though he tried, he couldn’t make the hospital in time.

Her death drove him to use a hammer to carve a path around the mountain. Every day he stood barefoot on those rocks hammering the mountain away. Though, he encountered various injuries, he still carried on. It took him two decades to win the battle against the mountain and reduce the distance from the village to the hospital by more than half.

Note: This story is inspired from Dashrath Manjhi’s life.

Guest post: Madhya Pradesh – the best place to explore Indian Wildlife

The Indian subcontinent is substantially rich in biodiversity and Madhya Pradesh takes the lead maintaining 9 National Parks and 25 Sanctuaries. Spread over an area of 10,862 sq. km., its natural reserves provide much needed shelter to the wildlife species which are rapidly losing their natural habitats due to human encroachment and various natural disasters.

Five national parks of the state are managed as project tiger areas. Most of these national parks provide elephant safaris while a couple of them also have boat rides and jeep safaris as well. This ensures that wildlife lovers get to explore the best of nature without causing any harm to it. Below is a glimpse of the richness of Madhya Pradesh’s biodiversity.

Bandhavgarh National Park

It is often said that if you can’t have a glimpse of a tiger during your wildlife safari in Bandhavgarh, then you are not likely to see it anywhere else. Though, it might sound a bit exaggerated, but when a count of around 22-25 tigers resides in this area open to tourists, you are bound to hear such exhilarating statements.

Five sentence fiction: I am special because..

For the love of learning..

For the love of learning..

From the time, I was born, I have been addressed as this special kid who has become used to being wrapped in cotton wool.

I was quick to realize that the speed and the thought process with which I did my coursework was no match in front of the other students in my class many of whom never left the chance to ridicule me as if I were some joker.

There were so many instances when I came crying home to my family only for them to keep me motivated to fight the big bad world out there.

They always believed that if one has the dream to achieve something in life, even the universe conspires to make that dream come true.

While doctors called me a special child since I had dyslexia, for me the will to achieve something special only became stronger over the years.

What brings a tear to our eyes?

Tears are secretions from the lacrimal glands in the eye. They are generated due to a variety of mental or physical issues which may or may not be controllable by the individuals themselves.

From a mental standpoint, we cry either when we are distressed about something or our happiness knows no bounds. Loosing your girlfriend, getting your dream job, failing in the exam, losing an important deal, meeting your parents after many years and so on and so forth are the kind of situations which we all go through day in and day out.

Diwali celebrations

As per the Ramayana, Diwali was a festival of celebration, lights and happiness at Rama, Sita and Lakshman’s return to Ayodhya after 14 years in exile. It started off as a festival wherein people whitewashed their houses, lit up diyas (glow lamps), performed Lakshmi Puja and met friends and family.

But over the years, Diwali has unfortunately also become synonymous with gambling, firecrackers, noise and air pollution and more. Along with killing and injuring numerous human beings over the years, these firecrackers are also dangerous for all the animals around as they are loud enough to scare them.

100 word fiction: As it waited for its prey..

As it waits for its prey..

As it waits for its prey..

© 2015, Barbara W. Beacham

I watched the vulture looking at me hungrily as I lay on the ground bleeding and injured. What had I done wrong? I was just a tiny little bird who was trying to learn the way things work in the big bad world.

My mother had advised me to be careful of those big creatures who had always troubled us. And therefore, she never allowed me to go out anywhere without my siblings. But I always sneaked out when she wasn’t around. While I did get caught many a time, today was different.

It had become a day of despair.
