Memories are moments or periods of life which play a role in shaping our thinking and belief and also influencing our way of doing things. Memories may be beautiful, not so beautiful and the ones which are actually nightmares. We always make it a point to remember the beautiful memories. But as is human nature, nightmares are at the forefront of our minds as well.

For me, the most cherished memories are those which were spent in the Sultanate of Oman with my family where I was born and brought up. Those 17 odd years of my life in the beautiful and tranquil country were really well spent. The times at Indian School Muscat, the walks in the beautiful parks, the drives on the lovely roads, the visits to the spectacular beaches, the exchanges with the hospitable people – it was truly beautiful.

“So I guess, this is it. It’s really saddening that all our years of love and happiness had to end in such a way. Was it so difficult for you to maintain a long distance relationship?

He didn’t answer and just walked away to the nearby restaurant leaving me empty and lonely. The sky was getting gloomier as the minutes ticked by. As the snowflakes began to fall on my face, I could feel the dull surroundings mirror the emotions in my heart.

I stood there hoping that he would look back at least once but it wasn’t to be.

A day in the life of a ragpicker

“Sir! Though our life would seem like torture to you, this is all I have seen growing in a society which didn’t have any luxury so to speak of.”

Since the last 20 years, Mohan’s daily routine centered around picking up the refuse from the nearby localities and selling it off to individuals who could recycle it into useful materials. Though initially, he rarely got the right price from the individuals, he had learnt the tricks of the trade over a period of time.

Life was always a challenge as the money was just enough to help them live a hand to mouth existence. But then, times had changed and today he had a filmmaker at his doorstep who had begun penning the story for a documentary to show the lives of ragpickers like Mohan to rest of the world.

Love is an emotion which makes us do a variety of things which we may not always do. From surprising them with gifts to taking them out to an expensive restaurant; from doing things that evoke nostalgic memories of the times gone by to just giving them a call to express how much they are missed and loved, all of us do all this and more to keep our loved ones happy and smiling.

I have always believed that we are responsible for our own feelings. If we are sad, it’s because more often than not, we ourselves tend to think about the unhappy and depressing things in life rather than appreciating the happy moments.

If we are happy and satisfied with our lives, there are more chances for us to succeed and achieve our goals and dreams. A happy mind and soul is a perfect ingredient for success.

Success should be considered as a result of happiness rather than the other way round since the barometer for success changes from time to time.

We humans are so selfish aren’t we? We have cut wood, trees and destroyed the habitat of animals so much so that a lot many of them have become extinct, endangered or are on the verge of getting wiped out. Humanity is about living and letting others live their life happily. Therefore, isn’t this a gross violation of humanity? Aren’t we behaving as masters of the world without a care for the precious lives of others? Don’t animals have the right to live without having to worry about their survival day in and day out?

It’s quite unfortunate that despite being the national animal of India, the Bengal Tiger is among the most threatened animals from the activities of humans. While they have suffered from years due to poaching, human conflicts and habitat destruction, their numbers have increased to 2,226 as per the census 2014 which is a 30% increase from 2010. Special initiatives like setting up a tiger protection task-force, arresting poachers, trying to minimize human – animal conflicts among others has helped in increasing their numbers.

“How can they make you work such long hours under the scorching sun? This is totally inhumane.”

Raj had come over to the city with dreams of giving his family a better life in the village considering the salary he was being offered would help him enroll his children in the best of schools. But over the last year or two, the long hours under the extreme heat had taken a huge toll on his body and mind. Had he made the right choice?

A day to explore the town..

“All the streets are so empty and lonely. It seems as though the residents of this town have disappeared somewhere.” She exclaimed to her besties.

It was that time of the year when the people of Lanning, a town of just 400 people went to the nearby fair for a few days of fun and games. Sarah had kept this in mind while planning her backpacking trip to this quaint little town.

For her, such a day without any crowd was a day to freely explore the squares and the streets. She made it a point to keep her DSLR handy.

Does buddy parenting work?

There was a time when the sight of parents evoked fear, tension, nervousness and so on and so forth in children’s minds. But with the changing times, parents have also undergone a sea change. They have started acting more as buddies with their children empathizing with their problems, issues and difficulties rather than just acting as an overbearing and towering presence who do nothing more than scaring them. But does this so called buddy parenting work?

Most of us have always been averse to sharing the secrets of our relationships, bad habits, parties etc. with our parents. We are scared of them reprimanding us and putting up all sorts of restrictions to not let us do whatever we want. But isn’t that because we perceive parents as those humans who are always angry and looking to scare us? What if they behave like our best friends who listen to us and then advise us accordingly without jumping to any conclusions? What if they don’t judge us based on simple incidents in life? Wouldn’t it be a really delightful feeling?
