Weaving thoughts into words

Can women be stereotyped to just one label?

A woman’s place is only in the kitchen.

Women are the ones who take care of the children while men are the ones who go outside to work.

Household work is the domain of women while men can sit and relax.

Women cannot do physically demanding jobs.

Women are not the right people for top jobs in the corporate sector since they have to fulfill household responsibilities.

I am sure all of us would have made either one or all the above statements at least once during our lives. In patriarchal societies across the world, even today women are generally considered as those who can sit at home and fulfill the household responsibilities. Women who dare to go out and work, follow their passion and try to become multi-dimensional in their thinking and approach to life are frowned upon in many quarters.

But why so?

While the rich slept on hard mattresses, all she had was just a few sheets to protect her from the hard ground below next to the main street.

What she did have in abundance though was the determination to succeed and rise up the career ladder through hard work and extreme dedication.

Short of resources, she always had to borrow cash to fulfill her basic needs. With every trouble she faced, she was motivated to study doubly hard to get a good score in her MBA entrance exams.

And today, she finally sleeps on those hard mattresses in luxurious rooms she could only dream off a couple of years back.

Pimples – A pain in our lives

Acne problems

Acne problems

“Oh God! Look at him. His face is so full of pimples. Doesn’t he look awful?”

“Seeing the number of pimples he has, which girl would even want to come close to him?”

“Looks like he isn’t really bothered about his personality. If he has a problem with pimples, why doesn’t he care to treat it?”

I am sure there would be many of us who would have heard or made some of the above statements at least a couple of times in our lives. For each of us, the way we look shapes our lives in every sphere. Whether its getting a girlfriend or a boyfriend, getting a job or moving anywhere in the professional space,  all of us want to look good all the time.

And looking good starts from the top. While a person may not have great facial features to begin with, everyone expects basic stuff like neatly combed hair, a clean shaven look for guys, a non – oily face and the likes. Obviously a lot many girls don’t like the guys to be clean shaven. But let’s cover that in a different post.

Guest Post – Parking Signs: To Park or Not to Park

Parking signs..

Parking signs..

Last October, Andrea Hoagland drove up to Allentown, PA, parked her car, paid the meter and then met her friends. When she got back, 2 hours later, her car was gone. All that was left was a safety cone with a construction site where her car had been.

The Morning Call News interviewed Andrea as they played the video capturing the moment when the construction crew came and the tow truck took away her car. She had to pay a fine of $180 plus $10 for the parking ticket and all because the construction company, the city hired, didn’t put a ‘No Parking’ sign near their construction site.

Parking undeniably plays a major role in urban planning. In a Freakonomics podcast cheekily titled, “Parking is Hell,” parking fanatic and urban planning scholar, Donald Shoub discussed how “cruising” for parking spots affects the mobility, economy, and environment of urban cities. The lack of on-street parking space and signs are partly to blame for all the hopeful cruising drivers.

The day he lied to me..

The day he lied..

“He is a liar. He doesn’t even care what I feel. If he did, he would have had the guts to tell me the truth. All the times we spent talking sweet nothings for hours on end seem like a big joke.”

The first time our eyes met was when he trooped in coolly at 8:45am for an 8 am class. With unkempt hour and a shabby appearance overall, it looked as though he had just got up from sleep and set out for a long day ahead. He seemed too much into himself making me wonder if arrogance was his second name. For me though, classes were all about talking to everyone and making as many friends as possible.

Is doing laundry only a women’s job?

“A woman’s place is at home.”

“The woman of the house is the one who handles the kitchen.”

“The woman of the house should be the one who cleans and tidies the house.”

A lot of us must have heard many or all the above statements being uttered by relatives in our respective homes. This is just a miniscule snapshot of what society thinks even today. But why this mindset? Why is the women expected to work like a machine at home while the man relaxes after a tough day at work? Can’t a woman work outside home as well?

The antique wooden boat..

Though it appeared as nothing more than an antique piece of wood for anyone, for Raju it was his daily bread and butter.

For years, he had been taking his wooden boat out into the open sea to get his daily catch of fish for selling in the open market. From extreme heat to deadly winds and rain, his boat had weathered it all.

Seeing that it could sail through every challenge in his life, he had slowly but surely developed an attachment towards it so much so that he refused an offer to put it up in a museum.
