Movie Review – Jolly LLB

Directed by Subash Kapoor and starring Boman Irani, Arshad Warsi, Saurabh Shukla and Amrita Rao in lead roles, Jolly LLB is about an engaging court room drama between two lawyers as different as chalk and cheese. The promos which have been on air have managed to evoke quite some interest in the audience. Is it a comedy? Is it a serious court room drama? Let’s check it out.

Jolly (Arshad Warsi) is a lawyer who keeps searching for his big break. Since nothing much works out in Meerut, he decides to go to New Delhi to try his luck. There he comes face to face with Rajpal (Boman Irani) whose one of the most trusted and famous lawyers in the country. At first Jolly still roams around aimlessly. But when he hears about the hit and run case of a rich and famous family which Rajpal won for them, he decides to go deeper to find the truth. And thus begins an engaging David and Goliath battle.

The flick starts quite slowly. Arshad Warsi’s romantic track with Amrita Rao is half baked and needless. As the scene shifts to Delhi, the proceedings get more interesting. The courtroom drama, the one liners by Saurabh Shukla, the satire at how courts and lawyers function is awesomely done. A case which has gripped the nation, two lawyers at loggerheads with each other and a judge who is quite witty, this one surely portrays the drama effectively. The narrative moves at quite some pace in the 2nd half and that’s what takes the cake. An equal mix of serious drama and fun particularly through Saurabh Shukla’s act keeps viewers engaged throughout.

The music is nothing much to write home about. Honestly, the director should made this a songless fare. The dialogues are one of the best things about this one. Whether keeping you in splits or taking the story forward, they are truly well done. There are some amazing sequences in this one particularly involving Saurabh Shukla.

Boman Irani is excellent as the haughty, manipulative and somewhat evil Rajpal. He perfectly portrays the arrogance of this character. Arshad as Jolly handles the dramatic as well as the comic moments with ease. But the best is reserved for Saurabh Shukla. He is funny, witty and serious all at once. He is the real jolly man in this one. Amrita Rao does fine in a role which doesn’t have much significance.

All in all, go for this powerful court room drama. You will surely have a jolly good experience!

    Nice one bro. 🙂
I felt that though the story was good but every part of the movie was quite predictable. You can easily guess whats gonna happen next.

Saurabh Shukla’s acting was really commendable.
And that act of Rajpal(Boman Irani) of hiring fake witness to get his full fees was too cool. I never knew that lawyers are so witty.

Anyways it was a decent one time watch.

Thanks Sameer :). Yeah in a way if you see its predictable since its a battle of David vs Goliath. But what takes the movie quite a few notches higher is the acting of the star cast and the dialogues particularly given to Saurabh Shukla :).

As far as Boman Irani is concerned, he’s quite awesome as the arrogant lawyer who knows how to manipulate anything for his own benefit :D. His role may actually resemble certain existing famous lawyers ;).
