Book Review – Tanzeem

Tanzeem is the fourth and final installment (After Lashkar, Salim Must Die and Blowback) in Mukul Deva’s series of military thrillers. He has written these books at such breakneck speed that he released the 4 books over a span of 4 years from 2008 till 2011. I like many others am in love with his Tom Clancy style writing. And ever since I read Blowback, I was waiting for the day I could lay my hands on Tanzeem.

The book begins where Blowback ends. After the confrontation with the heads of the Indian Mujahideen, Iqbal, the undercover Force-22 operative decides that he needs to go into the heart of Pakistan and take out the killing machines with his own hands. Despite attempts by the top brass to prevent him from taking such a decision, he doesn’t heed their warnings and takes on the arduous journey. The rest of the story deals with how he succeeds in finding and befriending the group of terror masters waiting to unleash a wave of urban global terror. Does he succeed? Is he killed? You got to read it.

Book Review – The Patriot

To be truthful I hadn’t ever heard of this book or the author. A couple of weeks back I got an email from him asking me to review his labour of love. I immediately checked out the synopsis and was hooked on. A novel on marine terrorism and that too by an Indian author is as rare as it can get.

The book goes with the tagline: Terror on the High Seas. Going through the cover with the image showing a very rough sea and a ship – INS Indraprastha in the background, you start thinking that this is going to be a real thrill ride.

With over two hundred thousand metric tonnes of highly volatile crude oil, she is a massive Indian flag merchant vessel sailing in the Arabian Sea towards Cochin in India. But in between the ship is hijacked by 9 highly equipped terrorists who with their Kalashnikov’s and grenade launchers look ready for a grueling mission. They plant underwater mines around the hull in front of the captain’s eyes. What is their aim? Will their mission succeed? Why does one of the terrorists change sides midway? The book tackles all these questions and more.

Rewind 2010: Pakistan = Disaster

I am sure many of you must be wondering as to what’s great in equating Pakistan to disaster or for that matter how does one say that in 2010 Pakistan became synonymous with disaster as it has for years been the terrorist hot spot of the world?

Yes – Pakistan is synonymous with everything wrong happening in the world
Yes – Pakistan is the terrorist hot spot of the world
Yes – Pakistan is waging a proxy war with India

But then 2010 was different? With more than 50 suicide attacks killing and injuring thousands, this year has been the bloodiest in a decade. These attacks haven’t been limited to Waziristan or some other god forsaken regions. But instead Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi – all the main cities have been targeted with targets ranging from markets to police academies to even the World Food Distribution Program. Pakistan own creation – Lashkar – e – Toiba and Al Qaeda and thousands of other splinter terrorist groups are striking back on the country of their birth for reasons from supporting USA to inaction against India.

But then terrorist attacks haven’t been the only problem? Corruption and Greed as prominent as always has literally RAPED the economy with inflation crossing 20% many times. The FDI has dropped to pathetically low levels. Industries and foreign companies are closing down. Tourists especially to once-beautiful-now-terrorised regions like SWAT have fallen down dramatically.

Whatever was left after the terror attacks and corruption was destroyed by the floods. The biggest flooding in more than 50 years killed and rendered thousands homeless destroying the economy completely. Seeing how the aid provided by the world countries had seen its way to the terror groups, countries didn’t really donate much this time around. Sad for the people :(. But then when your own government doesn’t care a damn and people like Zardari and Kayani are more interested in gaining power, what does one do?

All in all Pakistan took infinite steps backward to disaster in 2010!

Aisam Qureshi and Rohan Bopanna: Indo – Pak express – Stop War Start Tennis!

Both are 30 years old.

One is from Bangalore, India while the other is from Lahore, Pakistan.

Both are ranked dismally low in singles.

When they were not a doubles pair, they weren’t recognized the way they are now.

“It’s amazing, what they’re doing off the court. They’re promoting world peace, basically. Two warring countries, and they’re playing together. We’re proud of them, everyone is. And they’re doing great things on the court. We think they’re a really tough team, we just barely scraped by them last week. Both really good guys, well-liked by all the players and fans.” — Mike Bryan (Brother of Bob Bryan – Top seed duo in Doubles).

But since the time, Aisam Qureshi and Rohan Bopanna have joined forces together, they have created magic first in the ITF Futures events, then the Challengers and finally now the WTA and ATP events and above all the big ones – The Grand Slams. 2010 especially has been a magical year for both of them – reaching the quarters in Wimbeldon, beating the Bryan brothers at Washington, reaching the finals of the doubles event at New Haven and reaching the finals of US Open where they went down fighting to the Bryan brothers.

Both of them played together for a while in 2008 but then parted ways because they were ranked really low and couldn’t get into tournaments they would have wanted to. But by mid 2009 when their careers had started blossoming, they decide to join forces. The fact that one of them was from India and the other one from Pakistan made their pairing even more interesting to watch out for.

Both of them have been asked numerous times about what people back in their country think about their pairing considering the tensions between the two nations. Their reply has always been summed up with the slogan they stand by – STOP WAR! START TENNIS!

They are emerging out to be the true PARTNERS IN PEACE AND TENNIS for two nations separated by continuing enmity and decades of war !
