100 word fiction: Empty Vessels

“Oh god! Not again.”

She was tired seeing the number of empty vessels each day. Her children weren’t keen on calling anyone from outside to clean the house during the pandemic. And so, all the duties fell on her shoulders.

Though she could still do a hell lot for her age, her back and legs had started to give way. Her children were more than culpable for her condition. They didn’t even bother to provide any succor saying they were too busy.

She looked at the frondescence outside and just kept wondering when would she be free from all this.

They always loved cooking different cuisines together. While Ronnie ensured that the chopping was properly done, Amanda concentrated on the cooking.

“Hey, can you hold this vessel for a while?”

“But I want to hold you.” Ronnie looked at Amanda with a naughty grin.

For them, spending time in the kitchen was an extension of expressing their love for each other.

Amanda loved decorating the kitchen with teak wood cabinets, vases of different sizes and colours and white hanging lamps. For her, a fresh and welcoming kitchen always gave the impression of a fresh and welcoming home with delightful people.

“A woman’s place is at home.”

“The woman of the house is the one who handles the kitchen.”

“The woman of the house should be the one who cleans and tidies the house.”

A lot of us must have heard many or all the above statements being uttered by relatives in our respective homes. This is just a miniscule snapshot of what society thinks even today. But why this mindset? Why is the women expected to work like a machine at home while the man relaxes after a tough day at work? Can’t a woman work outside home as well?
