Weaving thoughts into words

Photography: Creativity brings happiness

The last few months have been nothing short of a nightmare for millions across the planet first with the coronavirus and then with the ensuing effects on the economy, poverty and more.

Many of us have been extremely lucky and privileged to be able to pursue our interests and also do things which we kept delaying for a long time. And this has given me nothing but utmost happiness.

I have been blogging since 2009. But for the last few years, my blogging frequency had dipped quite dramatically due to a variety of factors including me just being plain lazy. But just as the pandemic struck, I began the April A to Z Blogging challenge which involved me blogging everyday in April except the Sundays. And since then I have just continued on and on.

Some statistics – 279 out of my 1093 blog posts have been published since April 2020. My Alexa blog rank has jumped from 870,000 to about 80,000 odd. My subscribers have increased. The bounce rates are low and the time spent on my website at about 13 odd minutes is at an all time high.

In this period, I also published my first solo e-book of short stories on Blogchatter – An online blogging platform which connects a variety of bloggers and writers. The dream to publish a book had always been there but I guess I just wasn’t taking the steps to make it a reality. My next goal is to get it up on the Amazon Kindle Store as soon as possible.

I guess the pandemic has taught me that anything is possible if one has the will power and determination to stay at it.

Shining moment

Shining moment

I have been lucky to have had a lot many shining moments over the years. But if I had to point out that ‘one shining moment’, it would be the first time I got published in an anthology. It had just been about 2 years since I began blogging and to be part of a paperback in such a short time was nothing but a dream come true. I was still learning the ropes of blogging (I still am 11 years down the line ;)). But back then, it was still early days in my writing journey and that experience was my first step into the world of publishing. Thankfully there were a lot many interesting authors and bloggers out there always ready to help and support.

As the skylarks were

in flight, the young ones joined in

to learn the new tricks.

Blog comments

Blog comments

As in life, feedback is very important even when it comes to blogging. Without regular feedback, a blogger wouldn’t know how well he / she is connecting with the audience. The blogger wouldn’t know how to improve and take his / her blog to the next level.

And so I was quite intrigued when I saw the questions at Blogging Insights

How important is the comments section to your blog?

I would say it’s one of the most important sections since I feel that my audience helps me to keep improving myself day by day. Without their feedback, the blog would just be a barren land simply like a desert without any trees around.

Do you read comments on other people’s blogs / posts?

I guess it depends. Sometimes if I am referring to a blog for a piece of information, I would read the comments as well since I am of the belief that a lot of interesting insights are shared in the comments section in such cases. But in case if I am reading a poem or story on a blog, I wouldn’t really see the comments. Instead, I would just share my opinion.

Photography: Pastime

During this lockdown, we have all either inculcated new pastimes or revisited old ones. While binge watching shows on Netflix, Amazon Prime and the likes is definitely up there amongst everyone’s pastimes, what about pursuing a hobby or interest.

In the past two months I have been blogging more than I ever did in the past 2.5 year. I have also been cooking very regularly which I had been doing only occasionally in the past few years. Moreover, with the world still fairly locked down, all one can do is reminisce old travels.

I love the postcard board and the magnet board we have at our house.

Rekindling my passion

Rekindling my passion

I have been blogging since the last decade. But in the last few years as I got busy, the blog lost traction amongst readers. Things were looking down so much so that my bounce rates were up, my Alexa rank had disappeared and the time spent on my blog had decreased dramatically.

There was a time when I blogged about 4-5 times a week. This had dropped to once a quarter. But as the world went into lockdown, I rekindled my passion of blogging through the April A to Z Blogging Challenge. And then, there was no looking back.

Thankful to be in the blogging world

Thankful for being a part of the blogging world

Bloggers have so much to be thankful for. From having the platform to express themselves on any and every topic under the sun to attaining celebrity status for their writing exploits, there’s a lot happening in the blogging world these days.

Power of the written word

Bloggers can freely express their thoughts into words on any topic of their choice. Their blog is their personal space where they can easily voice their opinions without having to worry about word limits or being politically and diplomatically correct (sadly this is changing a lot these days).

Social causes

With an increasingly volatile world, bloggers have slowly but surely become the voice of various social campaigns like the social prejudices and abuse against women, the myths about AIDS, the effects of global warming and more. A lot many people have started to take bloggers quite seriously.

Journey to a self hosted blog

Blogging Journey to a self hosted blog

Blogging Journey

It’s been 7.5 years since I began blogging. When I started my journey, blogging was just about penning down my thoughts and feelings. It simply felt like an online diary where I could rant about anything and everything under the sun. It’s taken lot of hard yards on the road to a self hosted blog.

Slowly, I realized the importance of comments, shares, likes, having a social media presence and so on. It was all about making oneself heard. Blogging was no more a pastime among a select few which was the case in the early 2000s in India. It seemed as though almost everyone was rushing to open a blog. But then, more than 90% of them remained dormant after a few posts. In this clutter, one had to make an effort to be heard and seen.

In conversation with Nishant Kaushik: Author of multiple bestsellers

Nishant Kaushik

Nishant Kaushik is the bestselling author of Watch Out! We are MBA, A Romance with Chaos, Conditions Apply and My Father is a Hero. He keeps a day job with Infosys Limited and currently lives in Australia. You can find him on Twitter.

He joins us for a quick tete-a-tete.

Aseem: How does it feel to be the author of multiple bestsellers?

Nishant: I am not yet content. Bestseller is an ambiguous term, because as well as your books sell, they can always sell more. I keep working towards that.

Aseem: How different is writing novels when compared to blogging? Do you like one above the other?

Nishant: I prefer writing novels (I am not a very regular blogger). When I write novels I get a chance to escape the real world and delve into the alternate universe my characters inhabit. That journey is something I relish, and I don’t get to experience it while blogging.

3 blogs I am thankful for..

Thankful Thursday

Over my 7 years 0f blogging, I have more often than not realized the fact that blogging is not just an individual activity. While each of us writes on his or her own blog and the thoughts are personal, blogging communities and events play a strong role in helping build a community spirit. Why do we need a community spirit? Whether its exploring different writing prompts, learning the tricks of the trade from experienced bloggers, co-authoring books and articles and more, for bloggers the acronym BFF has become ‘Blogging Friends Forever’.

There are numerous blogs which I do take out time to read. Though I do admit that I am irregular in the sense that I may read many posts at one time and then would come back again only after a few months.

While it was difficult to narrow down my list from the numerous ones I read, here goes 3 (or I say 4) of them in no particular order.

Parul Thakur (http://www.happinessandfood.com)

Parul writes on a variety of topics which includes issues faced by women, travel and photography, gratitude lists, food posts and more.

I love the way she articulates her thoughts about any topic she writes. She has a lucid writing style and doesn’t hold back in calling a spade a spade. Her posts also reflect how observational and thoughtful she is. All in all her posts are a reader’s delight.
