A for Acropolis & Agora

Acropolis and Agora

Parthenon at the Acropolis Complex

Acropolis is one of the greatest symbols of Greece. This complex with its more than 20 odd monuments is located on the top of a hill overlooking the historical city of Athens.

It’s amazing when you think that these monuments were constructed sometime in 5th century BC. They would have been architectural marvels during those days constructed by some of the best architects one could think of. And I am sure, the costs for the construction would have been mind – boggling as well.

Some of the most important buildings in the complex include the Parthenon, the Propylaia, the Erechtheion, the Temple of Athena Nike and the Theatre of Dionysus among others.

Over the years, many of these buildings were damaged due to a variety of reasons. And therefore, since 1975 a restoration program has been in place to ensure that these monuments are restored to the glorious past.

The area around Acropolis is really green

On another note, the Acropolis is such a famous tourist spot that almost every restaurant or hotel in the area adds one of their USPs as “We provide the best view of the Acropolis“.

Roman Agora

Acropolis and Agora

Agora was like a place for any kind of gathering in ancient Greece. The Roman Agora which was constructed in the 1st Century BC is located quite close to the Greek Agora. Over time, the Roman one slowly but surely became the main market of the city.

Tip:

If you stay in the City Center, the archaeological monuments like the Agora’s, the Acropolis among others are all in walking distance.

I am participating in the A To Z Challenge for the second time this year and I am penning travelogues.
