Why is it important to smell good?

Why is smelling good important?

“He works as a sales agent but smells so awful all the time. Wonder how would he even sell his products when people would hate even sitting next to him?”

“Guys who don’t care about their body odour are such a turn off as far as I am concerned.”

“For me, working hard is only part of the deal. The personality of each employee should reflect the seriousness for which they are here. Whether its looking good or smelling good, presentation always matters.”

I am sure many of us would have come across few or all of the above situations. There are so many of us who think that smelling good isn’t really that important. If you are busy at office working all day along, why should your looks matter? Shouldn’t your superiors only worry about your work rather than your personality?

The simple answer to this is the fact that a person’s personality is very important to project his or her seriousness for any task. Consider a scenario wherein a person goes to his office straight out of bed without taking a bath. To top it all, he hasn’t shaven for a week. While some companies don’t really bother how their employees look, most bosses would be turned off seeing their sub – ordinates come to office in such a get up.

In any relationship, love and compatibility is obviously the most important thing. But then, what if you smell so awfully that your partner would dread staying with you? In such a scenario, love would be replaced by the irritation of your partner at you not taking any measures to smell good.

I have heard of cases where either of the partners have dumped the other due to poor personal hygiene. How would you stay with someone who isn’t really clean and doesn’t bother about his or her personal hygiene day in and day out?

There are many who complain that they work in the sun all day long and so they sweat. When this sweat dries up over the course of the day, they smell awfully by the end of it. But then, even  in such cases, people should always ensure that those clothes are put up for washing. Moreover, having bath a 2nd time especially during the summer months would always help stay fresh and clean.

Obviously it’s not that if we smell good, we’ll get everything in life be it a girlfriend or a good job or complete happiness. But then, smelling good is surely an important part of one’s overall personality. Having a regular bath in the morning and smelling good is a sure shot recipe to start any day on a good note.

I am sharing my odour story for the ‘My Nose Knows’ contest as a part of the #SniffSniff activity at BlogAdda.

  1. Attire matters and for me, how one smells is very important. You are right, it also shows how serious you are in life – for your job and people around you.

Without the right attire and the right persona, the person wouldn’t really be taken seriously. And would be considered more a fool than anything else.

  2. It can go the other way, too. I work with someone who douses themselves in cologne and it is hard to go near his desk without my eyes watering.

Haha true James. I have also met a couple of people like that ;).

  3. It’s a coincidence that I saw this in my email after I published an article about the power of smell. I’ve edited my post to link to yours. Thanks for writing!

  4. Attire matters and so does the body odor. While I don’t say that one should be soaked in perfume all the time, one should not smell like rotten eggs 😛

True that, Parul. Being soaked in perfume is also quite awful :P. And mind you, I have actually come across quite a lot of people like that ;).
